“Print is a romantic form of expression.”
<A3XA GRAPHIC NOVEL>is the first comprehensive documentation of A3XA’s trailblazing practice. Combining manifestos, essays, travelogues, and past works, it is narrated in four chapters. It attempts to present some of our thoughts in experiments and practices through an easily understandable comic book style, using multiple perspectives and first-person narratives.
“The interesting parts of the design process are often those that didn't come true” we showcase a series of projects in their pre-execution states in the book, persisting in doing some inspirational collage and painting work beyond technical drawings. We attempt to break out of traditional frameworks and constraints, presenting some of our understandings of how to shape urban spaces through a “graphical manifesto.”
These texts and images attempt to question and critique traditional architectural thinking. We strive to find a balance between “Naive utopia” and “Rigid pragmatism,” exploring a path of “practical utopian architecture.” In the face of the rapid changes in urban development, we consider how to center our thoughts on the relationship between people, architecture, cities, and the environment in a humanistic way.
We live in an era of luminous, virtual screens, an era inundated with fragmented information and an exploding of images. Consumerism prevails, digital reading evolves rapidly, and we are constantly surrounded by various messages, notifications, emails, and social media updates. Digital codes gradually blur our physical perceptions. We pursue efficiency and speed, as if only by going faster can we keep pace with the times. At this moment, the publication of printed materials seems to have become a "countercurrent" presence.
However, printed materials have a “tactile quality” and a “sense of ritual” that modern new media cannot replicate. From content to layout, from paper selection to printing, the production process is also a time for reflection and contemplation. In an era that does not lack speed and efficiency, we hope that through this “medium,” we can slow down, step out of the torrent of information, return to the essence of reading, and experience the sound of turning pages and the feel of paper. This way, we can reclaim the “focus” that has been “stolen” from us.
