Ricky Wong is a designer with more than 20 years of experience in architecture, interiors and product design. Based on the concept of “design brings infinite possibilities for life”, he excels at creating quality and creative space and products through utilization of modern approaches and rational thinking. Ricky established RWD in 1996 in Hong Kong and has been committed to China mainland market by setting up offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Under his leadership, the company with approximately 200 design experts has completed nearly 1000 projects among 20 cities and regions across the globe with the past 20 years. Ricky’s design and entrepreneurship have also received a wide recognition among the industry. 作为设计行业的领导者，“领先”对您意味着什么？

As a leader in the design industry, what does 'leadership' mean to you?

领先意味着“责任”，但是当然它不是一个排名的问题。我觉得“责任”是如何去设计、创造跟生活的关系，不断的去提升、不断的去追求生活与当下的关系，不断的去创新生活方式与当下的这个多元化的密切关系。我认为这个才是领先的意义。

Being a leader means responsibility. It's not just about ranking. Responsibility is about how to design, create and live in pursuit of enhancing the relationship with life. It's about innovating lifestyle in a diverse close relationship with the present. I think it is the meaning of leadership.

您成长于一个家具世家，对设计耳濡目染并且很早就展现了自己在设计上的天赋。那您是如何看待天赋在职业生涯中的作用？

Growing up in a family in the furniture industry, you were exposed to design and showed talent early on. How do you view the role of talent in one’s career?

对我而言，天赋很重要。或者说，对设计、对任何一个专业，我认为天赋可能是一个底层逻辑或者底层的一个需求，但努力更加重要。

Talent is very important for me. Talent is a fundamental need in design or other fields. But effort is more important.

以我个人的背景，因为成长的过程当中，无论看到的还是听到的，包括现在去应用、去回忆。这个当然是一个优点，是自己的一个优势。但与时俱进的成长跟后天的努力，必然是在不同的行业和我们这个专业，也是非常重要的一个环节。

Throughout my growth, what I saw and heard has always been a part of me, even as I apply and reflect on them now. Of course, having talent is an advantage. However, keeping up with time and making efforts is also crucial in our industries and others.

您一直主张“设计给生活无限的可能”。那对您来说，什么样的设计是一个成功的设计？

You have always advocated "design brings infinite possibilities for life". For you, what kind of design is a successful design?

设计是一个时代下的，不是一个单一的、永久性的，更多还是要迎合当下、迎合使用的人。我觉得这个应该是一个成功的（设计）了。但是在这个过程当中，设计师总会追求更加完整、更加完美的项目、更加完美的表达。但是这也是需要一些克制的。因为过于的表达可能会太过出现设计的痕迹。但是我想说，设计不可能一成不变，其实跟“表里不如一”是一样的道理。因为如果太过于纯粹的话，其实出来的表现可能会过于的固化或者是没有创新。

Design belongs to its time. It’s not self-existent or permanent.A successful design caters to the present and the users. Designers always pursue complete, better, and even perfect expressions, but it also requires some restraint. Because excessive expression may be deliberate. But I want to say that design cannot be unchanged. It is“say one thing and do another”. The result may be rigid or not innovative enough.

所以我觉得最看重的其实还是做设计开始定位的一个“魂”。围绕这个空间的使用值跟人文的关系，我们简称叫“魂”。其他的室内的部分、建筑的部分其实都是一个承托者、承接者，它是一个工具，那工具的表达应该是为了生活上的便利跟高效。

So, I think what is most important is the inside, the “soul” fixed at the start of the design. We call it “soul”, which revolves around the relationship between the value of the space and culture. Interior and architecture are supporters and tools for the sake of convenience and efficiency of life.

您的项目拥有细腻的细节处理，彰显匠心匠造的态度。您如何看待“设计的匠心”？

Your projects have meticulous attention to detail and craftmanship. How do you view 'craftsmanship in design'?

“匠心”，我想还是需要认真去做好自己的这个专业。第二个当然也是因为我们要去思考传承的工艺，然后用现代的手法或者是现在的科学的方式，两者去结合。但从人的角度当中，我认为“匠心”是一种精神，它也是一种责任、一种传承。但从表达的方式说“匠心”的话，我认为还是要去迎合当下的科技、工艺，再把传承的一些工艺方式来做结合。

I think it's important to take your profession seriously. The second thing is that we need to inherit craftsmanship and combine it with modern techniques. But I believe craftsmanship is a spirit. It is also a responsibility and inheritance. When it comes to expressing craftsmanship, I think we need to use modern technology and craftsmanship and then combine them with tradition.

您除了深耕于室内项目以外，还成立了产品研发团队。在公司未来的战略布局上您有什么考虑吗？

In addition to focusing on interior design, you also established a product design team. What’s your strategy for the company?

也说到我本身出生于从事家具行业的家庭，在产品上面还是会有比较深的一些印象，想去实现它。那第二个目的就是希望在我们的建筑与室内的空间里面能够把我们的设计表达的更加淋漓尽致一些，能表达给委托方一些不同细节的物品、一些关系。

I was born into a family in the furniture industry, which has deeply influenced me to work on product design. My second goal is to fully express our design intentions in our architecture and interior spaces and to present our clients with unique details.

但对于未来，在战略上面，我想重要的还是在建筑、室内跟产品的融合度上面能够带来一些更多的差异、不同的东西。但也希望能够有更多的一些不同的表达，把我们东方跟西方的工艺关系、新材料、新技术关系能融合的更好。这个是我想去实现的一件事情。

In our future strategy, the most important thing is the integration between architecture, interior design, and products, bringing about differentiation and diversity. I also hope to explore ways of expression and integrate Eastern and Western perspectives, new materials and craftmanship. This is what I aspire to achieve.

疫情给各个行业带来了机遇与挑战。后疫情时代，您对公司或者行业未来发展的前景有什么展望？

The pandemic has brought opportunities and challenges to various industries. In the post-pandemic era, what is your vision for your company or industry?

对于后疫情（时代）来说，设计应该是要思考另外的一些生活，前面三年给我们带来的一些经验。当然我刚才说了健康、新工艺、新材料，特别是在这部分上面，包括功能的一些组合，对于如何能够分解分离，包括更便利的方式，这个是在设计上要去思考的一件事情。

In the post-pandemic era, design should consider alternative lifestyles based on our experiences in the past years. Health is important. Use new technologies and materials, combine and separate functions, and see how life can be more convenient. This is something to consider in design.

第二个是在我们设计过程当中，能够更好的去采取当下的一些新的工艺方式的组合，特别是我们在做的这个精细化精装领域，那更要前瞻性的去思考这些事。当然也有另外一方面，就是在设计中的传统的、过去的这种面对面，实时下的这种沟通可以在更高效的一些方式上（例如可以采取很多不同的软件）能够更好的去表达。

Secondly, we can adapt new technology combinations, especially in the field of refined decoration we work on. We need to think ahead about these. To make traditional face-to-face team communication more efficient, we can adopt different software to facilitate communication.

您作为前辈，有什么给我们年轻设计师的建议吗？

As a senior, what advice do you have for young designers?

其实真的也还在路上。设计师需要十年、二十年去沉淀。主要（设计）不是一种急躁的或者是一种马上即成的行业。不能太急，要沉淀、去多看多走多思考。有一句话我一直在说，设计师一定要保持一个独特的思想跟独立的思考，这个是很关键的。

I’m still on the road. Designers need ten or twenty years to accumulate experience. It's not an instant success as to the field of design. Be patient. To learn more, travel and think more. I always say that designers must maintain unique and independent thinking. It is crucial.

设计是一个对生活，对工艺，对任何都需要创新或者需要去思考的事情。所以独立的思考一定要保持。

Designers need to have new ideas for life, craftmanship, and things that need creativity or thinking. So independent thinking is a must.
