The most distinctive feature extracted from West Village --- the circular ramp and public space, applying with exaggerated distortions, forms the steel installation placed in the exhibition stage. Little human figures are installed around the installation, not only demonstrating the scale of the Village, but also creating a vibrant atmosphere. Within the steel installation, there placed an interactive installation based on the design of West Village. By rolling steel balls, visitors are able to personally experience the relaxation and circulation. Screens on side walls show photographs, architectural drawings, construction details, videos, etc. Multiple layers of the exhibition response to the spatial relationship of West Village.

“People Mountain People Sea - A Celebration of Everyday Life” was Liu Jiakun's exhibition in the Central Pavilion of the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. This time in US, as the first architect to participate as an artist, Liu Jiakun exhibits with Italian artist Lara Favaretto and British installation artist Mark Wallinger, for the Summer Exhibition of  SCAD Museum of Art.

People Mountain People Sea" is not only the first time come to the United States, but also the first time to be exhibited in a pure art museum. This installation is the abstract represenation of West Village. How to lead the audience on site to experience the significance of this architecture to the local community and the city? Besides the organization of the exhibition space, it is also another re-creation of the scene of the little figures.

As a senior architect who has accumelated years of experience, Liu Jiakun also shared the story of West Village and his personal experience with students from SCAD Architectural Department and the course of "Sustainable Development". He also explained the reason of having this Chinglish name :

"'People Mountain People Sea' in Chinese is to describe a huge crowd of people. The Chinglish translation was initially popular online, but it's now officially included in the Urban Dictionary, an American online slang Dictionary. In fact, what I want to express is that 'misreading' could be likened to a window. Some things may not be correctly understood at first, but it may also lead to good results."

The crowd of the reception on the day was like a response to "people mountain people sea". Scott Singeis, who is the Professor of SCAD Architectural Department, hosted the opening ceremony.

问答

Q&A

01

...The West Village, given the amount of opportunity you provided the residents, shop owners, and construction workers some form of self-authorship in the actualization of the architecture... the application of broken ceramic into wet concrete naturally varies, the insertion of rebar as baluster is intentionally random, and the weaving of bamboo as a concrete imprint is akin to a fiber artist. What is the origin and reason for these characteristics in your design philosophy?

My motivation is to resist domestication and overturn conventions; my cre ative source is folk wisdom. These techniques are refined from grassroots practices.

02

Mr. Jiakun has referred to the current architectural development in China as that of a ‘teenager’ – a period of development and self-discovery before maturation and self-awareness...How do you see your influence on the discipline of architecture within China, and do you feel conflicted by the current trends as compared to what you’re able to achieve through your own projects? In other words – and I know that you are also a man of literature and art so you will recognize these references –are you Don Quixote tilting at windmills fighting injustice through chivalry, or are you Banksy subversively working in the shadows?

If it was the former, I would feel a little sad and heroic. Maybe the latter, but it's not so clear, because I'm here and you know who I am. I usually do things by instinct, not always clear about what to do. However, I always clear about what not to do.

03

...It appears common that some of the most rewarding aspects of your architectural career are also those elements most under scrutiny by authorities... What is the relationship between politics and your architecture and what is your consideration of political impact in the design process?

I don't want to practice architecture from a political point of view. I'm more focused on architecture itself -- even though it's hard to define. I don't think much about politics when I do design, but politics sometimes find me -- architecture indeed is often political.

Let's do some quick-answer questions. No explanations.

| What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Devote to what I like.

| What is your greatest fear?

Lose passion.

|  Which living person do you most admire? It is difficult to answer. Maybe the director: David Lynch (I am reading his book); Wim Wenders who just had a visit to Chengdu; Alfonso Cuaron because I just watched the movie  "Rome". Or actor Cate Blanchett... Oh, so starstruck.

| What is your greatest extravagance? Freely control my time.

| If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Master English so I dont need a translator.

| Who are your favorite writers?

Many, but no favorite. Borges, Yourcenar, Calvino, Krakow,

Nabokov, McCullers, O 'Connor... To my surprise, the childhood house of my favorite American Southern female writer, Flannery O 'Connor, is also here. What I see and feel here, the oak trees, the red brick castles, the tin roofs, the hot weather is what I pictured when I read her books about southern cities in the United States.
