In early April, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) moved into their new office location in the Lehel district of Munich, near the Isar River. Internationally, this is their eighth office, and within Germany, their fourth — alongside locations in Hamburg, Berlin, and Aachen. With this move, gmp is strengthening its presence in Bavaria and southern Germany, a region where the firm has been active since its founding over fifty years ago. The branch is led by Executive Partners Stephan Schütz and Magdalena Weiß, with Robert Friedrichs, who is relocating from the Hamburg branch, heading up the new office locally.

Two prominent public buildings that shape Munich’s cityscape were realized based on designs by gmp: the Gasteig HP8 cultural center, featuring the Isarphilharmonie, was completed under tight time and budget constraints and opened in 2021 in the Sendling district. The modular timber concert hall, together with the renovated historic Hall E, forms a cultural ensemble that has become a well-established venue for a wide range of events in the city.

The headquarters of the European Patent Office, completed in 1980, was designated a listed building in 2022. In gmp’s history, it marked the firm’s first major project following Berlin Tegel Airport. Over the four decades of its use, the building has repeatedly been adapted to changing requirements through conversions and expansions. Currently, the facades are being redesigned to achieve higher energy efficiency, with the Munich office overseeing the implementation.

gmp还参与过慕尼黑另两大知名项目的早期设计，其竞标方案鲜为人知：1972年奥运会场馆设计竞赛（1967年克劳斯·尼科尔斯、蒂姆·奥特与安克·玛格团队获第二名）；1974年慕尼黑新机场概念方案，该方案为后续建筑设计竞赛奠定了基础。

Less well known are gmp’s contributions to two other high-profile Munich projects: in 1967, their second-placed design in the architectural competition for the buildings and facilities of the 1972 Olympic Games (by Klaus Nickels, Timm Ohrt, and Anke Marg); and in 1974, a preliminary design for the new Munich Airport, which served as the basis for the subsequent architectural competition.

In Bavaria, gmp has completed several notable projects, including the State Church Archive in Nuremberg (2013), the State Firefighting School in Würzburg (2016), the Audi Design Center in Ingolstadt (2017), and for the German Armed Forces, the Pioneer School in Ingolstadt (2009) and the Repair Center 11 in Manching (2022). The firm is currently involved in numerous additional projects across southern Germany, such as the Digital Building for the Ingolstadt Technical University of Applied Sciences, the new buildings for the B13 Vocational High School and the Breslauer Straße School Center in Nuremberg, as well as three renovation and repurposing projects: the Neuburg Campus of Ingolstadt Technical University, the Nuremberg Congress Hall, and the Velodrome in Regensburg.
