On April 29, the exhibition "Building Shanghai: Architecture, Urbanism, and Culture Since 1949" officially opened at the West Bund Museum. Tracing the development of Shanghai's architecture and urban spatial evolution since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the exhibition presents a profound interplay between local creativity and global cultural shifts through diverse typologies including housing, new town development, public cultural buildings, and urban renewal. It unfolds an urban epic spanning seventy-five years for visitors.
Curated by Professor Li Xiangning of Tongji University as Chief Curator and Gao Changjun as Executive Curator, the exhibition draws upon in-depth research from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University. Through nine thematic sections, over 80 classic case studies, and more than 300 exhibits, it systematically chronicles Shanghai's urban transformation from the early stages of socialist construction to the era of globalization. From the collective memory of workers' new villages to the ambitious spirit of Pudong's development, and from the revitalization of industrial heritage to the rise of contemporary landmarks, the exhibition utilizes architecture as a medium to connect the shared emotions and urban identity of generations of Shanghainese.

In 2011, the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, an architectural complex embodying both international standards and regional characteristics, emerged from the former industrial site along the Huangpu River, becoming the resplendent stage for the 14th FINA World Aquatics Championships. This comprehensive sports venue, integrating a multi-functional arena, an aquatics center, an outdoor diving pool, and a media center, not only hosted the glory of top-tier competitions but also interpreted the modern charm of Shanghai as a waterfront city through its distinctive design language.
The guiding principle of the design concept was to shape the park landscape, sports venues, and media center into significant elements that present and depict the regional characteristics of the river scenery, embankments, and bridges. The buildings are situated on several "islands" rising from the water surface, with the lake serving as a connecting thread, unifying them. It creates meandering, soft boundaries on the north side outside the arena and forms straight edges on the south side of the aquatics center. Bridges connect the aquatic structures, allowing people to perceive the magnificent presence of the water-based architecture and the striking overall image of the sports center from a distance.
The three sports venues share structural similarities, with comparable design approaches and the use of similar materials portraying a sense of overall simplicity and order within the architectural complex. The main structure of each building features a large-span steel arch, with extensive triangular white fabric covering the curved keel structure, evoking the spectacular image of numerous sails racing when viewed from afar.
As a significant landmark in Shanghai's development as a global city, the Oriental Sports Center not only serves international events with its advanced facilities but also narrates the innovative discourse of contemporary Chinese architecture through the integration of architecture with nature, tradition, and modernity. Today, this iconic structure has become a popular destination for citizens' fitness activities and cultural events, continuously radiating the vitality of urban public space.
