改建（UMBAU）意味着建筑遗产的持续转型。随着时代的变迁，人类对建筑的要求也发生着改变。在这个持续更新变化的过程中，对建筑材料和部件的再利用及循环使用既可节约资源、避免废料产生，也能利用现有建筑中储存的隐含能源。各种形式的建筑和当地遗产在这种实践中得以延续。改建——作为一种古老的文化技术手段，被赋予了崭新的现实意义。

UMBAU (conversion) means the ongoing transformation of existing structures. Just as times change, the requirements placed on our built environment also change. In the context of this ongoing process of change, those who reuse and recycle materials and components conserve resources, avoid waste, and make use of the gray energy stored in existing buildings. This practice also sustains architectural (and local) heritage in all its forms. Hence UMBAU, an ancient cultural technique, is gaining new relevance.

近五十年来，gmp·冯·格康，玛格及合伙人建筑师事务所一直致力于建筑的改造更新。作为一家成立于德国汉堡的建筑师事务所，gmp在全球设有多个办公地点，并于不久前在北京、上海和深圳分部庆祝了“gmp中国25周年”。事务所成立六十多年来，依循一个共通的设计理念，与业主和各方合作团队建立起对话式关系，在世界各地不同的文化背景下从事不同规模的建筑设计，工作覆盖了设计的各个阶段。我们的设计旨在保持建筑经久的生命力，并超越短暂的时尚风向。

For nearly fifty years, von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (gmp) has been engaging in UMBAU. gmp is an architectural practice that was founded in Hamburg. gmp has branches worldwide and just celebrated twenty-five years in China with three offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. With a generalist approach and 60 years of experience, we at gmp complete projects in dialogue with our clients and the participating planning disciplines, at all scales and cultural contexts, covering all design phases and working on all continents.

这一理念也体现在我们众多的改建项目中。gmp将在上海的久事艺术沙龙开幕的展览“UMBAU · 改建，不间断转变”精选了九十个改建项目中的十四个作为具体范例，这些项目涵盖了全球范围内不同功能、类型和规模的建筑，既有重要的公共建筑，也有日常建筑。它们皆是建筑改造实践方面的典范。我们从全面评估分析入手，针对现有建筑制定方案，以确保其现代使用功能。重新激活现有建筑的多样性始终是这一过程的核心。

Our aim to create architecture that is long-lasting and goes beyond temporary fashions is also reflected in our numerous conversion projects. In the coming exhibition by gmp "UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation" in Jiushi Art Salon in Shanghai, fourteen of ninety of these conversion projects are presented here as specific case studies. The selection consists of international buildings of various uses, typologies, and sizes. Both important public buildings and everyday architecture are represented. They are exemplary of the architectural practice of UMBAU. Based on a comprehensive exploration, concepts are developed that are based on existing structures and ensure a contemporary use. At the core of this process is always the reactivation of what exists, in all its diversity.

作为建筑改造经验的记载，我们展示了项目从概念方案起源到改建完成这一持续变革的各个重要阶段。这种变革是一个不间断的转变过程，是跨越几代人的合作实践。

To document our experiences, we highlight the stages of the ongoing change, from the conceptual origins to UMBAU, which continues as a Nonstop Transformation, a collaborative effort that spans generations.

China has transformed itself and the importance of the transformation of existing structures is constantly growing. Based on the sheer magnitude of construction activity, a tremendous contribution has been made to reducing CO2 emissions and saving resources. These very topics are the subject of our exhibition, Umbau. Nonstop Transformation, whose purpose is not only to highlight our responsibility as architects regarding the impending climate disaster, but also to vividly communicate the pleasure we find in using and further developing what others have created before us.

Thus, it is our hope that the presentation of our exhibition in China will open up a new chapter in the Chinese-German dialog in the field of architecture.
