AA全球访校项目

AA Global Visiting School

曾经培养出包括雷姆•库哈斯和扎哈•哈迪德等多位国际大师的英国AA建筑联盟学校(简称“AA”),从2008年在迪拜举办第一届全球访校课程(AA Visiting School, 简称“AA VS”)以来,已经在全球各个大洲的50余座城市举办,培养了数以千计的国际学生,成为AA国际教育合作项目的重要组成部分。AA全球访校旨在将最前沿的教育理念和开拓性的教学方法,通过与当地院校机构的合作交流,嫁接出不同文脉下应对当地多种人居环境议题的学术探索,让来自全球各地的年轻人,在全英文教学的环境下,体验AA实验性的设计思考方法。

2023年,新冠全球大流行病终于结束,在后疫情时代,我们选择了生态环境卓越的海南岛,作为AA全球访校项目在大中华区的唯一一站,具有深远意义。我们将在原有AA北京和深圳访校基于数据的设计方法基础上,继续用设计探索未来更加健康生态的生活方式,从城乡整全可持续发展思维的高度,尝试最新的运算化技法,应用包括游戏、影视和人工智能的多种创作工具与表达媒介,实验多样化的无界设计。

The Architectural Association Visiting School (AAVS) is a global architecture programme and network comprising myriad forms and agendas, all of which contribute to the perennial discourse surrounding architectural education. Launched in Dubai in 2008, the AAVS has now hosted thousands of students in more than 100 different programmes held across five continents. Alongside all the magic that happens behind the AA’s eight Georgian façades on Bedford Square, AAVS global workshops take participants on other unimaginable journeys that relate closely to the geographic and cultural conditions of their particular settings. They offer opportunities to engage with local forms of expertise, and in addressing many of today’s most pressing architectural, technological, cultural, urban, and social issues they provide the kind of global learning experience that is of vital importance for a 21st-century architectural education.

In 2023, the COVID-19 global pandemic finally came to an end. In the post-pandemic era, we have chosen the ecologically outstanding Hainan Island as the only AA VS in the Greater China, which bears profound significance. In Hainan Island this summer, we will embark on a journey of exploring designs for a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle in the future. Building on the data-based design methods upon the past AA Beijing and Shenzhen Visiting Schools, we will employ a holistic and sustainable development methodology to experiment with the latest computational techniques. We will also apply various visual mediums from the fields including gaming, film, and artificial intelligence to experiment with diverse, boundaryless designs.

海南岛是最受欢迎的国际旅游目的地之一,作为世界最大的自由贸易港,即将全岛封关运作,海南也从国家级升级为世界级的热带度假胜地和开放创新高地。同时,伴随着数字科技的发展,元宇宙、AI、数字孪生等技术经济在中国蓄势而发,海南岛有望成为新型人居生活工作方式的试验田。

此次选址在三亚市崖州湾科技城和天涯区西岛社区。前者是三亚以科技文创引领的城市新区,将为三亚孵化新兴产业,吸引全球的技术精英和文创引领者,来此共同分享海南自贸岛发展的机遇;后者坐落在三亚市西南8海里的三亚湾海域,全称西瑁洲岛,是海南第二大离岛。由于远离城市,海水污染少,岛上风景秀丽,空气清新,沙滩柔和,海水清澈见底;环岛海域生长着大量美丽的珊瑚,聚集生活着各种色彩斑澜的热带海鱼,宛如一个巨大的热带海洋生态圈。在此,既可尽情领略热带海岛美景,更能纵情体验多姿多彩的渔民生活,自然和人文环境保护都比较完好。两个场地交相呼应,一个展望未来,一个回顾历史;一个陆上,一个海上;一个国际化,一个地域化……这一系列二元属性如何在三亚这座城市互映互融,彼此成就,将成为本次AA访校探索实验性设计的主要方向。

Hainan Island, one of the most popular international tourist destinations, is on the verge of becoming China's next Special Administrative Region after Hong Kong, or a Free Trade Port. Following the island-wide border control, its special open policies are expected to elevate Hainan's existing seasonal residences from the national to the international level. Concurrently, with the development of China's digital technology such as the metaverse, AI, and digital twins, digital economic phenomena are poised for growth in the country. Thus, Hainan Island is anticipated to become a testing ground for new residential living styles to embrace the immersive digital life.

The selected site for this project is the Sci-tech City and the West Island in Sanya. The former is a new city area led by science & technology and culture & creativity industries, to attract the professional elites to participate and share the benefit of the Hainan development in the coming decades. Whereas the latter location is situated 8 nautical miles southwest of Sanya City in the Sanya Bay area and is officially known as West Meizhou Island. As the second-largest island off the coast of Hainan, its distance from urban areas results in minimal seawater pollution. The island boasts picturesque landscapes, fresh air, soft beaches, and crystal-clear waters. A vast array of beautiful corals thrives in the waters surrounding the island, which is home to a variety of vividly colored tropical fish, creating a massive tropical marine ecosystem. Visitors to this location can enjoy the stunning tropical island scenery while immersing themselves in the diverse and colorful lifestyle of the local fishermen. Both the natural and cultural environments are well-preserved and protected.

The two sites are complimentary to each other, as one looking forward to the future, the other reviewing the past; one on land, the other on sea; one for internationalism, the other for regionalism…… How to balance the urban & town duality of Sanya sets up the main design agenda for this AA VS in Hainan.

这次AA访校将利用海南三亚崖州科技城和西岛这对二元相关的场地,探索虚拟世界和物理世界共存的“元地”(Meta-land)概念,如何让“移动栖居”成为可能。与传统的城市和乡村环境相比,元地将更好的融合城市-乡村为一体,其上的建筑物应该是智能的、创新的、可以快速搭建和重组的、现实和虚拟环境相混合的,并与新的移动栖居方式相结合。设计的形式和对象包括但不限于船屋、移动客栈、背包工作室、折叠房屋、组合帐篷、可变居室等。元地将赋予海南岛特定背景下,现实和虚拟空间的一体化设计,让信息数据成为新资源,为人类提供连接城市和农村地区的、更健康和可持续的生活方式。

此次访校课程将延续AA北京和深圳访校的设计理念,及基于数据和运算化的跨学科设计实验方法。该课程适用于希望学习系统创新设计思维、申请世界一流高校学习建筑、或转专业到建筑学的世界各地的学生。根据具体情况,AA海南访校课程亦可以出具相关学分教学成效的证明文件,供参与者向所在大学申请进行相关学分的减免。

This AA Visiting School will capitalize on the unique setting of Hainan Island to explore the concept of "Meta-land," a coexistence of the virtual and physical worlds, and investigate how "mobile inhabitation" can become a valuable reality. In contrast to traditional urban and rural environments, buildings within the Meta-land concept should be intelligent, innovative, quickly assembled, and reconfigured, blend real and virtual environments, and be integrated with new mobile inhabitation methods. Design forms and objects include, but are not limited to, houseboats, mobile inns, pocket studios, folding houses, modular tents, and transformable living spaces. Meta-land will endow the integrated design of real and virtual space within the specific context of Sanya's Sci-tech City and West Island, presenting new resources for connecting urban and rural areas and fostering healthier and more sustainable lifestyles for humanity.

This AA Visiting School will also carry on the design philosophy legacy from the AA Beijing and Shenzhen Visiting Schools, integrating interdisciplinary, data-driven, and computational design experimentation methods. The course is suitable for students worldwide who wish to learn systemic innovative design thinking, or to apply for studying architecture at world-class universities, or to transfer to the field of architectural study. Subject to the individuals’ request, the AA Hainan Visiting School can issue official documentation demonstrating the course's academic effectiveness, which participants can use to apply for equivalent credit waivers at their respective universities.

工作坊的突出特点/培养的技能

Prominent Features/Skills Developed in the Visiting School

  • 访校分成两个先后关联的场地,师生们将往返于亚洲湾科技城和西岛两地间,从中体会不同的生活状态,获取栖居生活方式的灵感;
  • 访校将分为先后两个工坊,即“数据赋能设计”的调查研究和技法学习的技法工坊,以及“设计赋能乡村”的设计实验应用的设计工坊;
  • 学生们将学习体验运算化技能的学习和其背后的思想与逻辑,包括但不限于算法建模、数据分析和可视化;
  • 访校将引入游戏设计专家为各个教学单元提供基于游戏设计和交互叙事相关的经验及设计途径;
  • 学生们可以实践不同尺度项目的基于数据、解决复杂性问题的科学设计方法;
  • 学生将体验与当地社区居民的互动设计:在分析研究阶段与岛上的各类人群进行互动,了解他们的想法与需求;采访渔民以了解他们的生活方式和设计改进的潜力,并向当地社区展示设计成果以获得反馈,以期进一步激发更多力量的参与。

  • Participants will live and work between the two sites, i.e., the Sci-tech City and West Island in Sanya in order to search inspiration and experience different lifestyle for potential mobile habitation.
  • This Visiting School is divided into two stages: the research and technique learning phase of "Data Empower Design," and the design experimentation application phase of "Design Empower Village."
  • Participants will be learning and practice computational skills, as well as the underlying concepts and logic, encompassing but not limited to algorithmic modeling, data analysis, and visualization.
  • The Visiting School will introduce game design experts to provide narrative design approaches related to game design and interactive storytelling for supporting each design unit.
  • Scientific design methods based on data for projects at various scales, addressing complex issues will be taught.
  • Participants will have opportunities to conduct interactive design with local community residents: during the analysis and research phase, they will interact with island stakeholders to understand their needs, interview fishermen to comprehend their lifestyles and potential for design improvements and present their design outcomes to the local community to obtain feedback and further potential involvement.

Tom Verebes, Ph.D., is the director of his own practice, OCEAN CN Limited, based in New York and Hong Kong. His former academic roles include serving as associate dean for academic affairs at New York Tech from 2018 to 2020, associate dean for teaching and learning as well as associate professor at the University of Hong Kong, co-director of the Design Research Lab at the AA in London, and most recently before joining New York Tech as the founding provost of Turenscape Academy. In addition, Verebes served as a guest professor at Akademie der Buildenden Künste ABK Stuttgart from 2004 to 2006, and has held visiting professor roles at University of Pennsylvania, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Syracuse University, RMIT, Singapore University of Technology & Design SUTD, and University of Tokyo. He has directed AA Visiting School programs, including the AA Shanghai Summer School for 12 consecutive years, as well as AAVS Xixinan and AAVS Shenzhen.

Christopher Pierce is an educator, writer, curator, designer, and creative advisor specializing in global networks. He lectures internationally on education, research, and practice. He has more than twenty-five years of higher education teaching, management, and leadership experience in both the public and private sector. His essays have been published in books and journals worldwide.

Soomeen Hahm is a design researcher, educator, and architectural designer. Hahm earned her Bachelor of Architecture at the Beijing Tsinghua University and her Master of Architecture at the Architectural Association, where she studied in the Design Research Lab (DRL). Her latest research is centered around AR/VR, wearable machines, and human computer interaction. Hahm specializes in coding, digital simulations, and 3D modeling in various software platforms. Hahm has taught and lectured at numerous institutions in the UK and internationally, teaching studios, workshops, and short courses focusing on computational design.

可能存在一种介于物理世界和虚拟世界之间的地方吗?在物理世界中,信息通过物质的层层叠加进行编码,这始终遵循物理定律,并且不允许空间和时间的折叠。虚拟世界则由计算机模拟驱动,其基本构建块是比特(BIT),因此更加流畅。物理世界通过多种人类感官允许线性感知物体,而虚拟世界通常只刺激有限的感官,通常是视觉和听觉。如果将物理世界剥去其视觉和听觉体验,仅作为功能性存在,而将虚拟世界提升到在其上映射信息的视觉和听觉层,会怎样呢?

这个教学单元将会探索改变建筑和设计的论述方式,从纯粹的形式发现转向以用户体验为基础的方法。工作室将探索一个介于物理和虚拟世界之间的体验,允许空间和时间的折叠。功能性的物理对象将被插入到海南的环境中。这些对象将通过无缝虚拟信息映射与每个与之互动的人独特地感知,创造出无限的体验。它将专注于建立一个用户如何在多维度空间中体验物理空间的框架。

Can there be a place which exists between the physical and the virtual world? In the physical world the information is encoded on to an object by layering of matter which always follows the laws of physics and doesn’t allow for space and time to fold. The virtual world is driven by computer simulation whose basic building blocks are BITs and therefore more fluid. The physical world allows for a linear perception of objects through multiple human senses while the virtual world stimulates limited senses usually visual and auditory. What if the physical world is stripped of its visual and auditory experiences and made solely functional, and the virtual world is elevated to map a visual and auditory layer of information onto it?

This unit will change the discourse of architecture and design from pure form finding to a user experience-based approach. The studio will explore the experience of an in-between world (Every Man’s Land) allowing folding of space and time. Functional physical objects will be inserted into the context of Hainan. These will be perceived uniquely by each person interacting with them through a seamless virtual mapping of information creating an infinite set of experiences. It will focus on setting up a framework for how a user can experience a physical space in a multi-dimensional realm.

岛屿对城市领域的设计师提出了独特的挑战,有限的空间和资源限制使得对城市发展的监督至关重要。AAVS海南2023正在深入研究元栖息地;在其中,物理世界和虚拟世界的边界变得模糊,两者可以无缝地融合在一起。岛屿规模将是尝试这种元地策略和发展雄心勃勃的大规模策略的理想机会,让虚拟世界不仅居住在城市,而且居住在景观中。本教学单元将旨在开发创新概念,以保护海南岛的原始环境,同时以前所未有的方式促进其旅游业的增长。学生将在岛屿上进行大范围研究,探索创造元地并融入现有城乡形态独特特征的机会。

Islands present unique challenges to designers of the urban realm, limited space, and restriction of access to resources make it critical to have oversight on the urban development. The AAVS Hainan 2023 is taking an in-depth look at Meta-Habitat; where the boundary between physical and virtual world is blurred, and both can seamlessly blend into each other. The Island scale will be the ideal opportunity to experiment with the strategy of where such meta-habitat can take place and develop ambitious large-scale strategies where the virtual world inhabits not only the urban but also the landscape. This unit will aim to develop innovative concept to protect the pristine environment of Hainan Island, whilst growing its tourism in a never yet seen way. The students will research at the large scale of the island, opportunities to create Meta-Habitat growing into the landscape, and building onto the unique characteristics of the existing urban forms.

This unit will introduce and teach computational urbanism and mapping using Rhino and GH with add-ons as computational tools for territorial, city, neighborhood, and architectural scale analyses. During the workshop, students will learn through main functions and workflow of a substantial set of Grasshopper tools designed specifically for mapping and urbanism; They will learn, write, and develop their own custom scripts. Drawing upon existing datasets and their own understanding of the site they choose; students will learn how to detect and identify urban and landscape patterns for future form-finding.

由气候变暖引起的海平面上升是一个全球性的海洋问题。为了加强岛屿的海洋灾害防治和缓解措施,并确保其沿海地区的生态环境和经济社会发展,此教学单元将在海南岛的实验场地探索浮动基础设施和海洋生态系统的机遇和发展,以改善发展趋势。在访校期间,将鼓励学生通过生成设计和增材制造方法扩展沿海城市相关技术、创新规划、生态保护、生态和可持续发展,并设计系列建筑或基础设施以满足数千人生活、工作和旅行的需求。这将使学生们能够创造一种与最新的城市设计理念相结合的新概念建筑空间,如可持续发展、生态社区和活力城市。它可以成为建筑的未来发展指引,即建筑不再局限于陆地,而是可以生活在水上并为自然环境的保护与修复做出贡献。

海南岛,特别是三亚的西岛,作为研究、分析和测试的实验场地,学生们将首先在现场进行调查,找出相关生态问题。根据“移动栖息地和浮动土地”的主题,学生将探索更多可能性,并基于具体情况开拓新的设计机会,例如,岛屿的海岸线能否延伸?可以实施什么样的系统将陆地和水域联系起来?这样的发展在未来会是什么样子?相关技术如何应用?

Rising sea level caused by climate warming is a global marine problem. The rise of sea level has a major impact on the social economy, natural environment, and ecological system in coastal areas, including submerging the low-lying areas, eroding the coasts, and increasing the intensity of storm surges. In order to strengthen the marine disaster prevention and mitigation of low-lying islands and ensure the ecological environment and economic and social development of their coastal areas, our unit will explore the opportunities and developments of floating infrastructure and marine ecosystem in experimental site - Hainan Island to improve the situation.

During the visiting school, students will be led to design the infrastructures to meet the needs of thousands of people to live, work and travel within the area, creating a new concept of architectural space in combination with the latest urban design concepts such as sustainable development, ecological communities, and vibrant cities. It can become a future development trajectory of architecture, that is, architecture is no longer limited to land, instead it can live on water and contribute to nature. According to the topic of Mobile Habitats and Floating Land, students will explore more possibilities and open up a new spectrum of design opportunities based upon the specific context.
