SOM's collaborative design team in Shanghai is seeking a Senior Designer, Mechanical Engineering (High Performance Design) for the opportunity to build a strong and thriving career.

SENIOR DESIGNER, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

(HIGH PERFORMANCE DESIGN)

Location: Shanghai

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads HVAC design on small-to-mid scale projects
  • Prepares HVAC calculations, drawings, specifications
  • Performs HVAC condition assessments
  • Prepares HVAC design basis
  • Presents HVAC designs to clients, consultants and design teams
  • Monitors/resolves technical issues on multiple projects with minimal supervision
  • Manages time and workload to meet project task deadlines and commitments with regular interaction and direction from project leaders

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspires and leads others by example, participates in staff mentoring and training, clearly defines team member expectations and responsibilities, empowers others, and delegates where appropriate based on team members’ recognized abilities and potential
  • Directly supervises staff and is committed to direct reports’ professional development
  • Develops and engages in talent strategy to find specialists, leaders, and future professionals for the firm through resume review and interviews
  • In collaboration with team members, develops a clear and consistent work plan to achieve the project budget, deliverables, and schedule
  • Actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities
  • Contributes to the implementation of sustainable strategies in all project assignments and the associated development of staff knowledge
  • Contributes to the development of standards, policies, and procedures
  • Protects SOM from financial and legal risk

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a professional degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or a related field
  • Professional licensure is close to completion; LEED accreditation strongly preferred
  • Minimum 6 years of professional experience in mechanical discipline
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of ASHRAE standards and building codes for ventilation, humidity control, load calculations, and duct sizing techniques
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of key performance parameters for air handlers, pumps, chillers, temperature controls, ductwork accessories, heat exchangers and tanks
  • Demonstrates knowledge of key architectural considerations for HVAC equipment such as fan room sizing, shaft sizing, clearances, ceiling, and interstitial space constraints
  • Demonstrates knowledge of key electrical considerations for HVAC equipment such as voltage and phase, motor design, variable frequency drives, disconnect devices, low voltage requirements, and separation of HVAC and electrical equipment
  • Demonstrates knowledge of key plumbing and fire protection design considerations
  • Demonstrates detailed understanding of sustainable strategies and principles that can be applied to high performance projects
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of Autocad and Revit
  • LEED and WELL certification preferred. Familiarity with LEED, WELL and other green building rating systems required.
  • PE licensure preferred
